Forest in EuropeForest in Europe

This is a photo of my paternal grandfather, Harold V. Madden, originally from Zanesville, Ohio. He was a Lt. Colonel in the Army in charge of an Army depot just outside Lexington, Kentucky. I'm uncertain about his responsibilities and role during WWII, but he did go into Europe for a time period during the war.

Another photo of my grandfather, Harold V. Madden, (very small toward the bottom of the photo) with a bombed out building in the background. Somewhere in Europe....wish I knew where.

Here's a photo of my grandfather, Harold V. Madden (the fellow with the cigarette in his mouth), and his Army buddies playing poker one night. Looks like fun.

SignalsSignals

Here's my grandfather (left side), Harold V. Madden, working with an Army colleague doing some kind of signaling. I'm unsure about what they are doing, but I'm sure some veterans probably recognize what's going on.

Jack designed "nose-art" for a B-17 based drawings he did of his wife. This leather jacket, too, was hand-painted by Jack, and uses the same model. This image was taken at WOSU@COSI in Columbus, where veterans brought in WWII memorabilia.

The topedoed BinneyThe topedoed Binney

Taken after the Binney was towed into shallow waters. Dropped the one anchor so she wouldn't drift. The anchor and chain on the Starboard was let loose to run free to lighten the load so she could be towed in. I was standing in that gun tub when the torpedoed hit our ship. I was blown up about 8 feet against the gun barrel. Fell back down on the deck. Then came the time trying to get to the life boats. Couldn't get through the steam from the broken steam pipes. Did finally.
